There is something about a super-tall structure that stirs the human psyche. It seems to bring out the inner child in us. Excitement, awe, fascination and a kind of nervous energy in equal measures. Some are form over function. A push for status rather than creating an iconic monolith.
But the Burj Khalifa is one that gets the balance just right. It's laughably tall at 2717ft. To get that in to some perspective that's over twice the Empire State Building! But it's also a handsome lump. A gorgeously curvy structure helps wind move around the building, a major problem for a super tall creation. The vortex created from some make the higher floors rattle, not ideal in a construction primary built for private residence. Is it possible to feel 'grounded' 130+ floors above the street? I'm not so sure.
It's true that many of the world's tallest are not the economic success that some would think. But it does boost the surrounding area in a huge way, therefore justifying some of the massive costs.
I will always be a fan of the 'skyscraper'. It's ambition, engineering & design in it's most incredible form. http://www.burjkhalifa.ae/en/
